Freedom No Pull Harnesses

Let me tell you a little story about the Freedom No-Pull Harness and how I came to recommend them to other dog families.

Back when my foundation labradors were all still very young dogs and I was in the USA raising them, I had one girl in particular who would not walk nicely on a lead without jumping up, pulling, darting this way and that, etc. At the time I was hoping to title her, along with the rest of my labs, through Canine Good Citizen and one of the requirements was that the dog walked nicely on a loose lead.

Well for this girl, it seemed hopeless!

In desperation, a week before the assessment, I contacted a trainer that had been recommended and asked for help. She met up with us and could see the struggle I was facing. She asked whether I had ever tried using a harness on her and I said no (I was old school... lead and collar). She happened to have a Freedom No-Pull Harness handy, we fitted it to my rambunctious lab and the change was literally instantaneous! What I had been working for weeks to try to "fix" was fixed in minutes.

"Zodi" went on to pass her Canine Good Citizen test the following week with flying colours and I came home from the USA shortly thereafter with a new Freedom No-Pull Harness for EACH of my labs! (By the way, she's the fox red sporting the kelly green harness in the photo!)

So what makes this harness set so great? The Freedom No-Pull Harness features a patented control loop on the back of the harness which tightens gently around your dog's ribs/chest to discourage pulling behavior. It is instantaneous feedback to the dog... "I pull and this thing gets a bit tighter around my ribs... I back up and walk beside you and VOILA!, it's all nice and loose again. I think I'll just stay beside you instead of pulling or jumping ahead!"

The harness also features a structural connection ring on the front. Connecting to this ring is optional, but recommended, as it allows you to attach to the front and back of the harness at the same time (using the handy dandy 2 clip lead that every harness comes with). Used this way, you are able to control pulling as well as redirect your dog’s attention back to you for training and treats.

The chest strap is velvet-lined to help prevent rubbing and chafing behind the front legs and strong nylon webbing and stainless steel hardware is designed so that nothing is going to break, fray, or give way no matter how hard your dog pulls! (The webbing has been tested to withstand pulling up to 1720kgs -- I don't know about you but I'm pretty sure my arm would probably be pulled right out of its socket and go flying through the air WITH the dog if a dog was exerting that much pull strength!)

And I have to tell you about the lead. I think it's ingenious. It has TWO clips and a floating handle so that you can attach to both points on the harness for maximum control, or attach only 1 clip to the back ring of the harness and have a longer lead, or (what I really like about it) you can use the 2nd clip when you are at a cafe to easily loop your dog's lead around you, your chair, or whatever so you are handsfree to enjoy your coffee!

Here at the Dog House Shoppe I carry 4 sizes of The Freedom No-Pull Harness regularly in stock, although additional sizes are available through special order. The small harness will fit most all Labrador puppies for the first few months and the XL is the biggest I've ever needed for one of my labs here... and that was for a very muscular BIG boy. The rest of my labs wear a size Large as an adult.

And yes my labs at the Dog House still wear harnesses even as adults. They don't need them for the no-pull aspect anymore as they've all learned to walk without pulling on the lead but they seem to enjoy them and I enjoy knowing that there is NO STRAIN being placed on their neck/throat area... even if they suddenly see something they just HAVE to inspect! My dogs still wear collars on outings too but only as a "pretty" and to carry their council tags.
